Feynman Technique

Modified 2022-09-23

The goal is to understand a complicated concept by dissecting into small chunks, and focus on learning these smaller pieces.

  1. Get a piece of paper
  2. Write the thing you want to understand at the top of the page
  3. Explain it, as if you were teaching it to someone else.

In the last step you often repeat some of the information you already understand, but at some point you can't continue anymore. From the gap, you research the answer.

Example

The essence of the technique is distilling a complicated concept by further breaking down by constantly asking questions like a toddler, and eventually you should be able to explain a difficult subject to a toddler encapsulated as a story.

Procedures

Go through to the steps, explain what it does, but also explain how it does it.

Formulas

They 100% should be understood and not memorized.

Memorizing

Finishing a topic without referencing the source material, means you've understood and can remember it.
