Video Editing
Modified 2023-03-08
Pacing
- cutting audio up to make the audio breathe is the video editor's equivalent of punctuation
- slowing down/speeding up clips to make it less/more dynamic
- use dynamic zoom to add more movement
Transitions
- less is more, if a straight cut works
Version Control
- duplicate the timeline before making major changes
Edits
- backtimed
specify where the shots ends by only adding an out
- replace
used for syncing audio to a specific point in the clip (uses position of the timeline and playhead for the edits)
Audio
Any audio levels above 0 dBFS clip and will sound distorted, so you must always keep audio levels below 0 dBFS. There's some guidelines, but ultimately use your ears.
- dialog
target -12 dBFS
- sfx
between -10 and -30 dBFS
- music
between -20 and -30 dBFS (usually sounds louder due to a narrow dynamic range)
Color
Color correction is not something you can do by learning the controls of the color corrector, and it’s not something you can do well just using the scopes. It’s a highly creative skill.
Audio Post-Production
- soundtrack spotting
sit down with director and discuss what soundtrack elements are good
- dialogue editing
remove clicks, pops, uhms, reducing noise, replacing and potentially recording the audio, volume balancing
- sound design & effects
natural sounds, ambience, hard sound effects (usually synced with video), Foley sounds (sounds of actors interacting with environment, such as movement of clothing)
- music editing
diegetic music (music heard by characters), non-diegetic music (music only heard for the atmosphere)
- "audio correction"
volume controls, panning, dynamic controls and EQ
